The summer after Hurricane Katrina, not many schools were up and running, so Touro Synagogue opened it's doors to YALA's summer camp. Most kids, having never been in a synagogue, were fascinated by what they called "the Jewish church." Photographs that lined the halls showed only white faces, so the students decided Touro needed more Black people. The resulting song celebrates diversity and calls for unity.
lyrics
"We need some colors, in the synagogue/ we need an elevator in the synagogue/ we need some seafood in the synagogue/ we need some silence in the synagogue/ snap with it, rock with it, lean with it, bounce with it, preach with it/ all you rabbis gotta teach with it/ do it, do it, do it, do it/ you know we rockin' Jewish, Jewish, Jewish, Jewish, Jewish, Jewish."
